Curating Career Life Stories: How Did I Get Here? Episode 65 – An interview with Russell Kyncl

Join me for the career reflections of Russell Kyncl, financial planner and writer. The son of a minister growing up in rural Colorado, his plans for college are more about learning to be a better thinker than preparing for a career.

He’s drawn to psychology and lands an internship at a mental health facility. While his career starts to advance, he’s surprised when his boss invites him to not only leave his current job, but to exit the mental health field altogether. Terminal burn out had consumed him, he couldn’t see it but everyone he worked with could.

Determined to make a better career choice he finds a career counselor who helps him assess his gifts to identify a career where his uniqueness will thrive — financial planning. Fast forward to today where he now owns his own financial planning business, and sees his work as teaching, educating and strategic planning.

At age 65, he’s retired from the things that annoy him, and spends his time on the things he loves – helping people be more effective and productive at what they do. His strategic plan is to keep working and contributing for another 20 years. Words of wisdom that have served him well: “Once you decide to do something, you can’t quit until you are successful at it.”
