Looking for some interesting table topics to go with your thanksgiving dinner?

Would you like your kids to be more grateful this holiday season? And not just grateful to be off from school for a few days or grateful for upcoming holiday gift giving?

Would you like them more engaged with your parents, their grandparents, over the holidays and not just lounging in front of the TV or playing video games?

Try tossing out some of these table topics while passing the gravy…

  • What are you most grateful for this year or this month?
  • What was/is your favorite summertime activity?
  • What was your best vacation or trip?
  • What is your favorite memory with grandma and grandpa?
  • Who in the family looks the most alike?
  • What family features does everyone share?
  • Who sounds the most alike?
  • What personality traits do you see in each other?
  • If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you want to live?
  • What is the most interesting thing you learned recently?
  • What is the most courageous thing you’ve ever done? If the word courageous stumps them then try having them name a time when they were nervous or afraid to do something but then they did it and it worked out ok, they didn’t get hurt.
  • What is your favorite movie of all time?
  • Who is your favorite musician?
  • What is your biggest accomplishment or what are you most proud of?

You might want to consider capturing this conversation on tape, especially if your parents are getting up in years. There may not be many more opportunities to have everyone together. Most iPads and/or smart phones have recording capabilities or free apps that would allow you to record these wonderful memories.

We often take our close family members for granted – thinking that we really know them well. However, we don’t tend to ask these types of questions in the normal course of day to day living.

Sharing stories provides much insight into how a person’s character and strengths developed (or are still developing!) and usually leads to a better appreciation of one another.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Let the story telling begin!
