Best retirement gift ever — obviously it’s not a T-shirt!
It’s knowing you’ve made a difference and that you mattered!
I would be hard pressed to find a leader who wouldn’t agree with this.
Take the time to celebrate retirees in a big way by capturing their career legacy – their career highlights, accomplishments and challenges, people they admire and look to for advice, those they’ve mentored, coached and inspired along the way — pay tribute to the difference they’ve made.
What could be a greater gift than knowing the impact they’ve had on others and an organization? At times, leadership can feel like a thankless role — until someone announces their retirement that is — then people seem to come out of the woodwork with positive accolades, stories of admiration, and how they’ll be missed.
Funny how we seem to wait until someone is retiring or leaving an organization to share our feelings and stories about them. It is when we are faced with them not being there that we start to reflect on what they mean to us. The lessons we’ve learned from them, what we admire about them, the positive impact they’ve had on us.
Retiring can be an exciting but scary time. There’s an excitement and readiness to be done with certain aspects of working, accompanied by the occasional trepidation about: What will I do all day? How will I stay relevant? Have I accomplished all I’d hoped for?
It can be a whirlwind of looking back and looking forward. And rather than just reminiscing about fond memories, why not document and preserve them. Then they can be celebrated, cherished and shared with family, friends and colleagues!
Retirement, like life’s other milestone moments deserves a ceremony and celebration. Just as a graduation has a keynote speaker reminding graduates of their accomplishments while inspiring them about what lies ahead – retirement (maybe even more so!) should have a keynote speaker. Someone to honor and highlight a retiree’s career journey while inspiring their next, new chapter and adventures in life.
Imagine the satisfaction and peace of mind they will experience knowing their life’s work made a difference. Their time away from their family was worth it. Their impact meaningful.
Life can feel like a blur but when you take the time to reflect back on it, to capture and document it, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn and who you might have inspired along the way (including yourself!).
If a key leader in your organization is retiring, consider the gift of capturing their career story. Whether you’re in HR or on the leadership team, plant the seed and get the idea rolling.
Regardless of how much time you have or how much you know (or don’t know about their story) I can help come up with ideas and a plan that will bring their career story to life!

I am working with Kathy to tell another life story of adventure, courage and love: We are capturing the lives of my parents who grew up in Holland during WW11, immigrated to the US and became citizens, traveled around the world, and raised 2 children and 5 grandchildren. It has been a fun and poignant journey to document all of their adventures for their children, grandchildren and beyond.
Kathy – such amazing work you do to celebrate the difference people make in this world! It’s truly inspiring!
